Belize has completed an important planning stage for its cultural and creative industries, with an EU-funded UNESCO project presenting a national strategy and roadmap at an event on 23 October 2026. UNESCO reported the development on 30 October, describing it as a transition from designing policies to putting them into practice.

The event took place during UN Week in Belize and brought together national stakeholders, international partners and the UN resident coordinator, Raul Salazar. The strategy is intended to help policymakers, artists, businesses and civil society work from a shared set of priorities. It does not mean that all proposed measures have already been implemented.

UNESCO provided technical assistance, while Belize’s National Institute of Culture and History participated through its Institute of Creative Arts as the national implementation partner. The European Union financed the project through a broader programme supporting evidence-based cultural and creative industry policies.

Supporters argue that a coordinated approach could help turn creative activity into more reliable opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and social participation. The practical test now lies in assigning responsibilities, setting workable schedules and providing resources. Without those steps, a strategy risks remaining only a document.

The announcement marks the end of a project phase, rather than the completion of the country’s broader cultural development effort. The next challenge will be implementation that reflects the experience of creative workers across Belize.
